"Loteria V" /Cactus Gallery/ Mezzanine of The Last Bookstore

"Loteria V" ~ POP-UP SHOW in Downtown L.A.
Scheduled to run: September 21-October 5, 2019
RECEPTION: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 * 6P-9P
ADDRESS: Mezzanine of The Last Bookstore, 453 S. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013

Lotería is a traditional Mexican game of chance, similar to bingo, that uses images on a deck of cards instead of plain numbers. There are 54 images; each has a name and an assigned number. The cards are very colorful and the imagery on them is broadly recognized in all of Mexico, other Latin American countries, as well as European nations.

The most recognized version of Lotería is the “Don Clemente Gallo” rendition which was introduced in Mexico in 1887 by the French businessman, Don Clemente Jacques. The owners today own the registered trademark and have continued this version through 3 generations with the original artwork remaining the same.

All 54 images of the original deck will be represented in the show. Here is a link to the original Loteria set: http://loteria.elsewhere.org/clemente1/

In addition, artists are creating cards from a second set of Loteria cards #55 - 108. These works will be 3" x 5" max. Here is a link to the lesser known set, which is equally fun ~ http://loteria.elsewhere.org/clemente2a/

I am so happy to be painting the "ElSoldado" card again this year. Last year I chose "Joan of Arc". This year I was compelled to choose "Chelsea Elizabeth Manning". As a soldier, activist, whistle blower and wrongly imprisoned Patriot her story of injustice haunts me.
I celebrate her bravery and sacrifice in this painting.

7th Annual Bird Show/Cactus Gallery 2015

RECEPTION: Saturday, June 13, 2015 :: 6p-9p
Scheduled to run from June 13 - July 7, 2015

Cactus Gallery
3001 North Coolidge Avenue
Los Angeles (Elysian Valley aka Frogtown), CA 90039

Cactus Gallery is pleased to present THESE BIRDLY DELIGHTS, our 7th annual bird themed group show. People have always been fascinated by animals. Birds, in particular, seem to have sacred and secular meanings, which can be positive and negative, and their use is evident in religion, music, mythological tales, and visual art.

These feathered creatures can convey emotion or even comment on society. Birds and their symbolism vary greatly depending on different cultures and religions. Generally, birds are thought to symbolize freedom; they can walk on Earth, swim in the sea, and soar in the sky. They can be symbols of eternal life; perhaps a link between heaven and Earth. Some believe they are an omen of death, and yet others believe they represent wisdom, peace, and prosperity. Birds and their symbolism vary greatly depending on different cultures and religions.

Please join us to celebrate their powerful symbolism as seen through the eyes of 55+ artists. This show features an eclectic collection of media: oil and acrylic on canvas and wood, mixed media on canvas and wood, hand embroidery, paper mache, linocut prints, pencil, pen, and ink on paper, prismacolor, chalk pastel and colored pencil on paper and mylar, polymer clay and paper clay art dolls and sculptures, hand stitched felt, paper cut outs, wood carving, forged jewelry and mixed media sculpture.

Contact Sandra at semastroianni70@yahoo.com at for purchase info.

"Communing with the Ancestors" Ulla Anobile and guest artists.

“Communing with the Ancestors”
Scheduled to run: April 11 - May 5, 2015
RECEPTION: Sat., April 11 * 6p-9p
ADDRESS: 3001 North Coolidge Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90039

In putting together this show Sandra Mastroianni asked featured artist Ulla Anobile, whose 70th birthday prompted the show, to gather some of her thoughts, which you can read below.

The theme can mean so many different things. It can be as complex as trying to understand the heritage and beliefs of a particular society and the traditions we grew up with and continue with loyalty. Or it can be as simple as the feeling one gets when looking at a photograph of a grandparent. Or it can be all the unanswered questions regarding one's ancestry.

VIA ULLA ANOBILE: ”As I've grown older, understanding where I came from has become increasingly important. Now, looking at the improbable age of 70, communing with the ancestors, hearing what they may have to tell me, seems necessary, even vital.

So many of us have lost the connection to our roots and to the ancestral soil through various upheavals, dislocations, losses, neglect. To me, the ancestral soil means not only the physical dirt and its location (though those matter too, a lot!) but also the cultural, emotional and spiritual background from which I emerged. It has become clear to me that I've not only inherited the physical DNA of my ancestors, but also, to a great extent, the DNA of my psyche.

I've come to realize that the ancestral connection can be found in startling ways. It can be a strong reaction to a piece of music, or a surge of emotion when seeing an old photo, or a sense of recognition when reading about old customs, traditions and beliefs. Even seeing a map or a list of names found on the Internet can bring up a memory even where memories should not exist. Saying aloud the name of a lake, river or village can create a spark: yes, that is where my roots are, that is where my unknown ancestors once lived.

I've felt a sense of belonging when touching a material - wood, bark, burlap - that was important in my cultural background. I've felt it when putting the needle through cloth in the repetitive work of cross-stitching. A glimpse of a color - the combination of red and black, in my case - can awaken a deep response. So can connecting with an animal that turns out to have been of totemic importance.

Traces of the ancestral past do remain alive in the present: in stories heard, songs sung, words used, sayings and proverbs repeated, a dialect spoken, rituals clung to. Some of us have family bibles, even drawings of family trees; others have just a vacuum filled with the vaguest recollections. But I do believe that by making an effort to create a connection to those who came before us - however that is accomplished - can make us just a little bit wiser, just a little bit more whole."

Cactus Gallery, More than a space.

It is with a heavy heart that I post the closing of the Cactus Gallery (as we know it) at the end of this month. I have been an artist with the cactus gallery for many years and will miss it dearly. Thank you to Sandra Mastroianni for being one of the only gallerest that accepted me and my art unconditionally. Never telling me how and what to do with my art but giving me a place to express myself and show my art. Many will tell you if you want to 'sell' your art take it to Sandra, she truly has the gift of connecting art with collectors and art lovers like no other.

Cactus Gallery is more than the space it's housed in. I know where ever Sandra goes the love and spirit of her original vision will follow.

Please join me tonight December 7th in sharing stories and saying good bye to the Cactus as we know it. Let's also celebrate a new and brighter future for Sandra and her little gallery that could, did, does and will do!

We love you Sandra and Thank You from the bottom of our hearts for being such a great support to all artists. Most importantly Thank You for being my friend, Love you.

Sandra's Words:

I am closing the Cactus Gallery in its present location at the end of December. I have done nearly 100 shows in nearly 8 years - wow! I am disappointed with the way things are ending here. After years of saying the building/lot would be sold to me, the owner reneged on his promise. I simply cannot stay in this space any longer.

If you have artwork here, please contact me immediately and we can plan on a pick up or mailing before month's end. I must be out of the building before December 30th.

I am kicking around a few ideas and will let you know as things become more concrete. After a much needed month or so off, I will be in touch. If any of you have any contacts I should correspond with or know of any super generous building owners that love art and would like to see their space used for a gallery, let me know.

Please help promote the gallery these last few weeks. Feel free to mention we are closing our doors at this location. Let's get people to buy your art, or someone else's, and let's go out with a bang!

POTLUCK WEEKEND -- I will be at Cactus Gallery today, Friday December 7th from 6p-10p and Saturday, December 8th from 12p-11p (our LAST reception) and Sunday, December 9th 11a-6p. Please stop by to chat, drink some wine, maybe even buy some art, and plan the future of Cactus Gallery with me.

Extended gallery hours:
December 9-13: 11a-6p
December 14-23: 11a-8p
December 24: 11a-4p

Thanks again for your support and friendship y viva el arte!

Emotion

EMOTION”

In the spirit of "Experimentation", this small series has been interesting and fun to do. One day I decided to looked up the word "Emotion", and I was overwhelmed with the layers of the word. From the many different emotions them selves to theories and the theorists that have dedicated their lives to it. There are many categories of emotion along with perceptions, neurological and even the evolution of emotions. Fascinated by this, I decided to pick a few emotions and see what came out of my head, heart and body while thinking of them. I've chosen Fear, Fearless, Joy, Love, Indifference, Terror, Hysteria, Arousal, Wonder, and Shyness. Shown here in the annex are Arousal, Satisfaction, Fearless, Love, Shyness and Terror. To my surprise some came out pretty obvious and literal, while others appear the exact opposite of the chosen emotion. I decided that I wasn't going to worry about them being aesthetically cohesive to each other and let pure emotions guide me. It was nice to approach each panel, as it's own individual piece, within the concept.

Although this was an interesting experiment for me I’m not sure if it proved anything. Being constantly bombarded that concept is king and emotion should be pushed aside becomes a bit of the narrow minded criticizing the narrow minded, in my opinion. It seems that to subscribe to more than one school of thought is not accepted and one must pick one or they are just well... uninformed. I don’t believe this and truly feel that their are times when emotion can rule over concept and vice versa however it does seem without “both” and a cohesive aesthetic the work does becomes less of a series and more an individual piece, in some cases.

They will be showing at the Cactus Gallery annex along with Patricia Krebs, Mavis Leahy, Rick Strieck, Jon Measures, Ulla Anobile, Sheri DeBow, Lacey Bryant, Christine Benjamin and more!

Cactus Gallery, Saturday June 9,1012 7pm 4534 Eagle Rock Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90041-3215

FEATURE CACTUS GALLERY ARTIST IS WALT HALL. It's going to be amazing.

For "Songs to Sing When You're Lost at Sea," Walt's 6th annual exhibit at Cactus Gallery, collectors will find that Walt has added works on canvas, as well as larger works on wood, to his staple of distressed wood planks.

Walt Hall's paintings and mixed media works bring together images and thoughts of other worlds. The playful figures that inhabit his somber landscapes beckon us with an alluring melancholy, a yearning for times past - come see what he has in store for us on June 9th!

If you in NELA Saturday night the 12th check out my pal's shows at the NELA Art Walk.

CACTUS GALLERY is proud to present "In Light of the Dark," a solo exhibition by multimedia artist Patricia Krebs. For this - her fifth annual solo show at Cactus Gallery - Krebs presents a series of mixed media pieces primarily created with collage, ink and acrylic on canvas.

These new works reflect how polar opposites, or seemingly contrary forces, are interconnected and feed each other. She depicts how contraries (dark and light, feminine and masculine, good and bad, life and death, etc.) are all part of a universal balance, often times exploited by humans' need for strict classifications that often lead to prejudice.

The reception, which coincides with Northeast Los Angeles' (NELA) Second Saturday Gallery Night, is free and open to the public and will take place on
Saturday, May 12th, from 7-10 pm. For a map: www.nelaart.org

New works by Krebs can be seen on our blog - FRIDAY, MAY 11, NOON: www.cactusgallery.blogspot.com

If you have a question regarding availability of work, please contact Sandra @ semastroianni70@yahoo.com or 323.256.6117.

FUTURE STUDIOS
Opening: Sat. May 12, 2012 • 7 to 10 pm

Come meet the SF-based artist Liz Mamorsky (this is her third solo show with us) at the opening and enjoy Mel Knox's Uvaggio wines! These paintings are practically vibrating off the walls--they're super colorful and lively--and so LIZ!

“Painting is a surreal adventure. I prepare only by shedding preconceived ideas. Like Alice through the looking glass I enter the looming canvas. Filling its surface with fast, gestural marks, I fracture the oppressive whiteness. These frenetic brushstrokes allow my eyes to approach the canvas as they would profiles in the clouds or the animated branches of gnarled trees. They are my visual contours, the setting for my voyage.

“As I step into the vibrant world of oils the marks give rise to forms. Uncensored they swell, recede and disappear. Hypnogogic imagery streams across the canvas. Layers and levels of meaning and color build upon each other, my first strokes still visible in the pentimental landscape. My arms sweep right, left, up, down, my entire body stirs within the painting. The canvas records my actions, a menagerie of movement.

“The story evolves as the painting progresses. I try to hold on to reappearing figures, the narrators of my Wonderland. The journey is intense, sometimes frightening, sometimes funny, but always exciting. There is no end to the painting adventure.”

If you can't make the opening, the show is viewable by appointment until June 1 (call 323-254-4565 or email amy@futurestudio.com).
