Squaring The Circle/LA Art Girls
I am so excited to be participating in this amazing project representing the LA Art Girls. Thank you to Stephanie Allespach for curating our part of this temporary residence.

30 ARTISTS, A ONE-DAY EVENT AT THE SITE OF THE FORMER LLANO DEL RIO COLONY IN HONOR OF ITS CENTENNIAL. Craftswoman House and Hinterculture present Squaring the Circle: Llano del Rio Centennial an interdisciplinary arts event on Saturday, May 3rd, 2014 from 1 pm to 6pm with site specific installations and performances on view to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Llano del Rio Cooperative Colony, a utopian socialist community established in 1914 by Job Harriman in Southern California?s Antelope Valley. The event participants who reflect diversity in their work as historians, visual artists, filmmakers, writers, choreographers, dancers, musicians, activists, and transdisciplinary practitioners responding to questions that Llano inspires. How does site-specific place, and the historical archive relate to artists and their contemporary expression? How has the categorization of Feminism, Socialism, Utopia and Collaboration shaped artists' practices? For my personal contribution to the event. I silk screened patches that simply said Feminist as well as a workshop to make 'sit-upons' a long time Girl Scout camping project.

In our increasingly growing climate of mistrust, anger, paranoia, war and waste, these 6 artists show us how to find our empathy, compassion and hope for a better future. Whether it be intellectually or physically proactive they all strive towards recognizing our common bonds and making a positive impact on each other and the world around us. In thinking globally our every day actions and ideas can bring change. From ecology, global awareness, socially political efforts to exercise in personal growth, this exhibit serves as a reminder to ourselves and our audience to listen as well as teach each other to recognize our common bonds as human beings. As artists we hope to inspire and also take every opportunity to continue practicing tolerance compassion and building on the ideas of simple joy and support for those we know as well as strangers.

Stephanie Allespach has been a mentor and inspiration to me personally as well as many here in Los Angeles and in Berlin. Her generosity in sharing her knowledge alone exudes the feeling of hope in humanity that we should all be a part of. Her work is always smart beautiful and insightful all of the components that you as the viewer will be able to take away from this exhibition.
Sydney Croskery is a tour de force of talent plus humor as well as inner and outer beauty. Common threads that have consistently run through her work are opposition, hybridization, laboriousness, industry, violence, overabundance, humor, paranoia, fear, and beauty. Her kindness and empathy are ever present in her work as in her life. She is an inspiration and joy to all who meet her. I look forward not only to working with Sydney but am anxious to see what beautiful work she brings to this show.
Clifford LeCuyer is not only a personal favorite artist he is a talented poet and a beautiful human being. He has a gift for inspiring and making all of those around him feel happy on a daily basis. His recent work of “One Ups a series he refers to as a Giant Sketchbook", is a testament to his spontaneity and the simplistic beauty in which he brings to every project he does. His kind and giving energy is contagious. It is that of which all of us can share and take note of.
Alexx Thompson is a passionate and talented Videographer of who’s work I’ve been fortunate enough to have recently discovered. His many videos document the lives of the people he meets during his many travels. His video piece "Surreal Istanbul/Turkey in 24 Hours” tells a story of beauty and hope using his incredible cinematography and editing skills he captures the many story’s of the people he films.
Susan Catherine Weber is one of the most talented fine art photographers I've EVER. We have collaborated on several shows and I trust not only her vision but her amazing sensibility and unrelenting sense of humor. Whether she and her camera are walking the streets of Los Angeles or on one of her many around the world adventures she captures the essence and reality of any situation and space. I look forward not only to working with her again but being a enlightened audience member and enjoying her work again.
Kelly Thompson, event curator and participating artist. As an artist my work is usually community driven often with a socially political focus. The work I’ve chosen for “Oh The Humanity” is titled “puffs”. This work represents our fragile ecology and the promotion of a clean earth. Recently invited to exhibited this piece at Barnsdall Municipal Gallery it was such a delight. It is an interactive, ready made piece that was received with child like joy and enthusiasm. I hope to share it many more times to come. I will be showing a new painting as well.

“20/20 Vision” – a Northeast Los Angeles spectacle celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Arroyo Arts Collective Discovery Tour
What: “20/20 Vision” – a self-guided auto tour featuring more than 100 artists in homes and studios in Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Mount Washington, and neighboring areas

The Arroyo Arts Collective’s Discovery Tour — in its twentieth year this year — is one of the oldest and most eclectic art tours in Los Angeles. Featuring a range of fine art and craft by both emerging and established artists, the Tour gives attendees the opportunity to discover and purchase amazing pieces of art and get a glimpse inside studios and homes that are just as unique as the individuals who live and work in them. With offerings ranging from remarkable paintings to intricate metal works to hand-hewn musical instruments to one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry, the Discovery Tour will surprise and delight participants with its artists’ unique range of vision.
This self-guided auto tour focuses on Highland Park, Mount Washington, Eagle Rock, Montecito Heights, and Glassell Park. For those who don’t wish to drive, shuttle buses will be available with stops at select locations.
Northeast Los Angeles — or NELA, as the locals call it — truly is one of the city’s magnet neighborhoods for artistic talent. With a steady influx of galleries, restaurants and boutiques, NELA attracts creative energy from across the city. In fact, NELA has a rich artistic history that dates back to the late 19th century when poets, writers and artists would gather to socialize at El Alisal, Charles Lummis’ home on Avenue 43. Around the same time and just a few miles north, landscape painter William Lee Judson established the College of Fine Arts of the University of Southern California.
Don’t miss the opportunity to discover — or rediscover — this unique neighborhood and the artists who call it home. Purchase Tour tickets in advance for $10 or the day of the Tour for $15. The Tour begins at the Lummis Home, where participants will receive a map and tour badge. Barnsdall Art Center Fundraiser
This is a fundraiser well worth the donation. Barnsdall Art Center has been a valuable source of art and education for many Angelenos over the years. I can't mention it without someone saying, "I used to take classes their when I was a kid" followed by how the experience was so wonderful. So even if you can't make the event please consider a tax deductible donation to the center. I will also have an inflatable sculpture on display during the event. A big thanks to Meg Madison for curating and organizing the art for the event. Cheers!

What a wonderful performance it was at LACE in Hollywood. Great job everyone! I so enjoyed being the balloon wrangler. Was a little nervous at first but had a blast. I'm told I'm the best balloon wrangler in the west ;) The reactions I got when handing them out on Hollywood Blvd. were great. My favorite was the girl who held her stomach like she was full and said, 'oh,no thank you' as if taking the balloon would make her barf. I noticed most of the people who took them were happy people. It was so eggcellent!

From Debate to Create at LACE
What an amazing experience. I have to say after the first planning meeting for this performance I still had no idea what to expect. For that matter up to the very moment of the debate I was still not sure exactly what was going to happen. As Jerri and Inez kicked things off I was still stressing about what I was going to say when I got up to speak. Then it happened in a wave of organic spontaneous conversation and dialogue everything came together. The way in which no one and everyone became equal participants was a true example of a successful collaboration. The spirit of the debates was truly civilized and respectful with everyone given a chance to voice there opinion and then a short rebuttal. Then came the performance aspect. Thanks to Stephanie Allaspac and her big bag of props. We had a blast! The performance given by our group was so amazing with each and every one of us contributing equally. That is what I think was so amazing how everyone was a super star. Finally a circle was formed as Inez conducted a brief overall QandA siting a few one word questions with everyone sharing their 3ish word response. A big Thank You and Congratulations to Jerri and Inez for what was truly an example in equality and collaboration among us all.

Debating Through the Arts 4: Contemporary Issues in Performance Art
A Performative workshop based on the Model United Nations paradigm
Stay for the day or come for the debates at 10am-12pm and performances at 3:30-6pm
Teams of artists will creatively debate current issues in Performance Art such as the impact of Performance Art on civic life, individual ownership and collective public practice initiatives, and presenting controversial material to the general public.
Participating artists include: Stephanie Allespach, Juna Amano, Raul Baltazar, Stephen Fegely, Gerard St. Hubert, Daniela Ionescu, Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, Marissa Magdalena, Meg Madison, McCristol Harris III, Crystal Nelson, Jasmine Orpilla, Christine Palma, Christy Roberts, Leah Solo Taylor, Kelly Thompson, Marjan Vayghan, Gregory Walker and Erich Wise. Produced by Jerri Allyn and Inez Bush.
Through a structure of debate, caucus, collaboration, performance and voting that echoes United Nations proceedings, artists and audience will come together to explore issues in contemporary Performance Art. By developing creative proposals (art, music, theatre or dance), the goal is to provide a performative context for artists to demonstrate the importance of the arts in solving conflicts. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jerri Allyn, Debating Through the Arts: Performance Art co-creator is an Artist, Educator and Scholar with an MA in Feminist / Art and Community. A founding member of The Waitresses and Sisters of Survival, collaborative performance art groups, she has exhibited internationally and received a Rockefeller Foundation Residency in Italy; an International Lila Wallace Fellowship in Mexico; and National Endowment for the Arts grants, among others. Allyn was Director of Education and Public Programs at the Bronx Museum of the Arts in NY; founding Director of ACT: Artists, Community and Teaching at Otis College of Art and Design in LA, CA; and is currently Director of Programs at Venice Arts, CA.
Inez S. Bush, Debating Through the Arts: Performance Art co-creator is co-founder, CEO and Creative Director of Gramercy Partners, an award-winning marketing communications firm. Bush is a strategist, facilitator and consultant to the non-profit, business and education sectors. She teaches at Otis College of Art and Design and is currently coordinating the Otis K-12 Teacher Retreat on Media Arts, a Professional Development program. She holds an M.A. in Education, Leadership and Change from Antioch University LA, CA and BFA in Graphic Design from SUNY Purchase, NY.
